What is the Serie A?
Serie A is the leading professional soccer league in Italy and one of Europe’s top five leagues, behind only England’s Premier League in the UEFA coefficient rankings but ahead of Spain’s La Liga, Germany’s Bundesliga and France’s Ligue 1. Dominated by legendary European clubs like Juventus, Inter, Napoli and AC Milan, Serie A has long attracted the very best soccer players in the world.
In this guide, we’ll explain what to expect for Italy’s 2025-26 Serie A season and introduce you to the different Italian soccer bets you can place throughout the season at the Stake Sportsbook.
History of the Serie A
The Italian Serie A was established in 1898, making it one of the oldest professional soccer leagues in Europe. However, it wasn’t until the 1929-30 season that the competition was established as a round-robin league. Since its inaugural season, the format has changed a lot.
For the 2004-05 season, Serie A expanded to feature 20 teams, and it follows the same format today. Every season, 20 teams from across Italy all compete for a chance to win the “Scudetto” (small shield), so called because the champions wear a small coat of arms on their kit the following season.
Throughout the history of the league, Serie A has witnessed some incredible rivalries between teams and players. The giants of Italian soccer, including AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Napoli, are stalwarts in elite European football competitions such as the Champions League as well as the Europa League. Many Serie A teams also compete in the Conference League.
Inter Milan have spent an incredible 94 seasons in Serie A and are the only team to have played in Italy’s top flight every year since its inception. The Old Lady of Italian soccer, Juventus, are Italy’s most successful team, with 36 titles to their name and 21 runners-up. Inter Milan have 20 titles and 17 runners-up, while their local rivals AC Milan have 19 titles and 17 runners-up. When Napoli lifted the Scudetto at the end of the 2024-25 season, it was their 4th Serie A triumph, though they’ve finished in 2nd place 8 times.

Format & Schedule of the 2025-26 Serie A
Serie A is a round-robin soccer league, meaning that every team in the league must play every other opponent in two fixtures, one at home and one away. Teams earn three points for every win, one point for a draw, and none for a loss.
At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned champions of Serie A, while the bottom three teams are relegated to Serie B. Teams finishing in the top six positions can qualify for European competitions next season. The top 4 will qualify for the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, while the 5th place team qualifies for the Europa League, and the 6th place team enters the Conference League play-off round.
Unlike some European soccer leagues, there’s no winter break in the Italian league. Here are the key dates for the 2025-26 season of Serie A:
Opening fixture: 23 August 2025
Final day of the season: 24 May, 2026
Alongside Serie A, the Coppa Italia runs throughout the season, Italy’s premier knockout cup competition. Last season, Bologna won their 3rd Coppa Italia title, beating AC Milan 1-0 in the final.

Draw no bet – A wager on the result of a match that sees your stake returned if it finishes in a draw.

Correct score – A wager that allows you to predict the final score between two teams in a Serie A matchup.
Both teams to score – A simple bet on whether you think both teams will score in a Serie A match.
Halftime/fulltime – A bet on who you think will win the first and then the second half in a Serie A match.

Serie A Betting Tips, Predictions & Strategies
Here are some helpful tips to bear in mind as you make your Serie A selections this season:
Always bet with your head and not your heart. - You should consider team statistics and form when betting on soccer, so it’s best to avoid bets on the team that you support. We’ve got stats on all Serie A matches and Italian players, including live stats when the games are in-play. Keep an eye on team news too, as the absence of key players has a big impact on a team’s chances.
Consider the home advantage - Always check which team is at home when betting on Serie A matches, as home advantage plays a big role in the outcome of every fixture. Last season saw home teams win 40% of matches, while 32% of away teams won their games. Smaller teams can beat bigger rivals when at home, though it’s not a guarantee.
Bet on the over - Last season, Serie A matches saw an average of 2.56 goals per game, so betting on over 2.5 goals could potentially make a profit if this trend continues. Meanwhile, 93% of games finished with at least 1 goal scored. While Italy may have a reputation for defensive football, top attacking talents regularly shine in Serie A.
